Small Business Bookkeeping FAQs

What is outsourced bookkeeping?

Outsourced bookkeeping is when a professional independent bookkeeper like Blue Keel handles your basic bookkeeping and accounting tasks so you don’t have to take care of these responsibilities within your business or have someone on payroll. As an accounting firm, Blue Keel can help with regular bookkeeping responsibilities, audit/tax preparation support, and catch-up or clean up services.

Difference between bookkeeping and accounting?

Bookkeeping services as an extension of 'accounting' refers to the daily and monthly recording of transactions, including maintaining the ledger, supporting payroll for employees, managing and categorizing transactions, and preparing you and your CPA for tax season. Accounting goes more in-depth and can involve reporting on, assessing, and leveraging financial information (taken from regular bookkeeping) to help inform business strategy, create financial models, and provide useful insights.

Will you be able to manage my payroll?

Blue Keel offers outsourced payroll as part of our bookkeeping services. We mainly use Quickbooks Payroll and also ADP or WagePoint to manage your payroll depending on your need and capacity. The way it works is that as a client you enter the payroll hours on your end or you send them to us and we can do the entries on your behalf whereby your remittances will be filed and paid automatically. The software will auto-populate T4s and employee Records Of Employment (ROE) which are then submitted to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Employee pay stubs are accessible online.

My books are disorganized and not up to date. Do you help with clean up or catch up bookkeeping?

Whether you’re months or years behind in bookkeeping, we’ll be able to help you as this is part of our service. Our fast, skilled QuickBooks bookkeeping clean-up and catch-up service will get you up to date—and provide you a more accurate view of your financial records to allow your business to be stable with confidence and peace of mind.

Will I be able to get in touch with my bookkeeper when I need them?

Yes, we are available via telephone and email and we will generally respond to you within a few hours on weekdays. We can also set up a specific time for a phone or virtual meeting.

How does outsourced bookkeeping work for my business?

Blue Keel outsourced bookkeeping is whereby your business partners with an experienced bookkeeping firm like ours to handle all your financial record keeping requirements. Blue Keel will manage everything from tracking your expenses and processing payroll to preparing financial statements to help you ensure compliance come tax time. Our service helps you free up your time and resources to help you to focus on core business activities. Leave the accounting to us!

How can Blue Keel help if I already have an in-house team?

Having a team in-house that is both experienced and reliable is important to your business success. Where we come in is helping your business 'unload' mundane tasks from your team members to helping with training or QuickBooks data challenges, and providing support that is tailored to your business needs.

What are the benefits of outsourced small business bookkeeping?

When you outsource your small business bookkeeping to Blue Keel Bookkeeping and Accounting, it’ll save you time and money since you won’t have to perform those duties in-house and won’t have to hire your own in-house bookkeeper. Additionally, an outsourced bookkeeping firm in Toronto can bring the latest accounting industry expertise to ensure accurate books and efficient financial reporting. You may even save money by preparing accurate books in preparation for your tax return and don't have to worry about your employees being sick or taking vacation and unable to complete the bookkeeping.

Are your outsourced bookkeeping services trustworthy?

In other words, is it safe to deal with an outside third party to handle your financial bookkeeping? Will your business or finance people lose control over your financial data by relying on Blue Keel's bookkeeping service? Like most outsourced bookkeeping firms, Blue Keel relies on the latest accounting software and technology to protect your data and privacy. You'll have complete access to your financial data and enjoy even greater visibility and control over your business finances. For example, you’ll be able to respond to discrepancies immediately — this can be invaluable in detecting and responding to errors, fraud, or unethical behavior. You'll also give us permissions to the tools we use such as QuickBooks.

How much money can I save with an outside bookkeeper?

A lot depends on the scope of the work and the time requirement. Even with that, considering that the average salary for a full-time in-house bookkeeper is in the range of $40,000, it can still prove to be a very affordable and reliable service. When you outsource your bookkeeping services to Blue Keel can perform the same work at a small fraction of the cost without the need to pay benefits and pay for other costs like time lost — and sometimes more reliably than an in-house employee.

Can you pay my bills for me?

Yes we can if you give us access. Depending on how small you are , typically smaller companies like to pay their own bills but we can accommodate your needs.
